On the subject of Mexicans Dancing

Now I’ll be the first one to tell you I am not much of a dancer. Some people have two left feet, I have two 56k modems stuck to my pelvis - Utterly useless. Instead, I like to look at youtube videos of people dancing to humor myself, and to cry on the inside. Though I’ve lived in the US for more than 20 years, I still enjoy and love the rich, and sometimes bashit insane, culture of my once home. I have curated for you some of the more unique dance styles that occur naturally in Mexico. Some old, some new, some regional some mass cultural sensations. Please stop me from saying culture.

I’ll start you off slow with this dance that I believe (too cool for research) to be from the southern part of Mexico near whatever the mexican equivalent of Texas is. I guess it’s more of a Louisiana. Please be advised that you’ll probably have nightmares.

Though Cumbia did not originate in Mexico they have made it their own. This is more of an unorthodox way of hitting the dance floor (dirt). It originates (again no research) in the northern parts of Mexico and I believe southern California – which, face it, it’s Mexico (not really). They’re probably gang members so I wouldn’t make fun of them in real life (stereotyping).

Now this is an Aztec danza which I guess is supposed to be what the natives danced. Mostly I like it ‘cause they look like the dudes at the T-Hawk stage in Street Fighter 2. I like how some of them are chubby. Also polyrhythms bro.

I guess you can’t make a list like this and not include Tribal (3BALL) music. There’s nothing I can say. Pointy boots and the urge to go to the bathroom.

Then there’s this, which I can’t understand why it exists but I’m happy it does.

And I guess theres this which I don’t know. I think it’s a test to see if you notice the clown walking across the stage, kind of the gorilla basketball one.

So there it is. I think it’s cool the Mexico has never really stopped dancing. The whole grunge ‘I’m too cool to move’ thing was a dark period for dancing in the states. ( I was part of it, still am). With all this new focus on choreography and with Daft Punk trying to bring disco back, there could be a good chance that our children will be great dancers - Instead of, you know, making fun of dances on tumblr. Culture.

Listen

I don’t share music like I used to. So here is my effort to at least give you the chance to judge me on my musical taste. poser. Anyway this is for Spring 2013.
